What is the HOELT?
The Home Office English Language Test (HOELT) is the UK government's new single standardised English language test. Announced in early 2026, it is set to launch in December 2026 and will become the only approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK visa and immigration applications.
Why is the UK government introducing HOELT?
For years, UK visa applicants have had to navigate a complex landscape of approved English language tests. Trinity ISE II, LanguageCert B2, IELTS Life Skills, Skills for English, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI have all been acceptable - but this patchwork approach created inconsistency, confusion, and opportunities for fraud.
The Home Office's solution is to replace all of these with a single, standardised, government-controlled test: the HOELT.
What level is HOELT?
The HOELT is set at CEFR B2 level (equivalent to current B2 SELTs). It assesses all four language skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.
Who needs to take HOELT?
From December 2026, HOELT will be required for:
- Skilled Worker visa applicants
- ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) applicants - from March 2027
- Adult Dependant visa holders
- Scale-Up visa applicants
- Health and Care visa holders
- High Potential Individual (HPI) visa applicants
When does HOELT launch?
The HOELT officially launches in December 2026. From that date, existing SELTs will no longer be accepted for new visa applications.
