The Home Office English Language Test (HOELT) launches in December 2026 - and preparation materials are still scarce. Here are the six most important steps you can take right now to get ahead before the test goes live.
The HOELT is unlike any previous UK visa English test. It is administered by the Home Office itself, delivered fully online from your home, and will replace all currently accepted Secure English Language Tests - including Trinity ISE II, LanguageCert B2, IELTS Life Skills, and Skills for English - from December 2026. Because it is a brand new test, very few dedicated preparation resources exist yet. The tips below will help you start preparing effectively right now, even before official practice materials are widely available.
Understand the HOELT Format
Before you begin practising, make sure you understand exactly what the HOELT tests and how it is structured. The HOELT assesses all four CEFR B2 language skills - Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking - in a single remote sitting. Unlike Trinity ISE II and LanguageCert B2, which are delivered at physical test centres, the HOELT is taken entirely online from your home. Familiarise yourself with the question types and timing for each section as soon as official guidance is published.
Build All Four Skills Equally
Many test-takers focus heavily on Speaking while neglecting Reading and Writing. The HOELT requires a pass across all four skills - a strong performance in one area does not compensate for a weak performance in another.
