What Is The HOELT?
The Home Office English Language Test (HOELT) is the UK government's new single standardised English language test for all visa and immigration purposes. Announced in 2026 and launching in December 2026, the HOELT is designed to replace the fragmented landscape of Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) that currently exists - including Trinity ISE II, LanguageCert B2, IELTS Life Skills, Skills for English, LanguageCert International ESOL, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI.
Why Is The UK Government Introducing HOELT?
For over a decade, UK visa applicants have had to navigate multiple competing English language tests, each run by a different private provider, each with different booking systems, test centres, result timelines, and fees. This fragmentation created inconsistency in standards, confusion for applicants, and - critically - opportunities for fraud and abuse. The Home Office's solution is to take direct control: one government-administered test, one standard, one result. The HOELT is administered by the Home Office itself, delivered fully online from the applicant's home, with results typically returned within 24 to 48 hours.
Who Needs To Take HOELT?
The HOELT will be required for the majority of UK visa routes that currently require a B2-level Secure English Language Test. This includes Skilled Worker visa applicants, ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) applicants from March 2027, Adult Dependant visa holders, Scale-Up visa applicants, Health and Care visa holders, and High Potential Individual (HPI) visa applicants. If you are currently preparing for Trinity ISE II or LanguageCert B2 for a visa renewal or new application after December 2026, you will need to prepare for HOELT instead.
How Is HOELT Different From Current SELTs?
There are four major differences between HOELT and the existing SELT tests it replaces. First, delivery: HOELT is taken fully online from home, whereas current tests like Trinity ISE II require attendance at a physical test centre. Second, speed: HOELT results are expected within 24–48 hours, compared to up to 10 working days for many current SELTs. Third, cost: the HOELT is expected to be priced lower than most current tests, which can cost £150–£200 or more. Fourth, standardisation: unlike today's patchwork of providers, HOELT is a single government-administered test with consistent standards across all applicants.
What Level Is HOELT Set At?
The HOELT is set at CEFR B2 level - the same level as most current SELT requirements. It tests all four language skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. This means if you have already been preparing for Trinity ISE II or LanguageCert B2, the core language skills you need are the same - but the test format, delivery, and specific question types will differ.
