Since 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker and several work route applicants must prove B2 English, up from B1. Applications already submitted are assessed under the rules that applied at the time you submitted them.
B1 to B2 is one of the bigger CEFR steps. At B2 you need to follow extended, complex speech; respond to unexpected questions; and produce clear, detailed text. Most people who miss B2 miss it on speed, not grammar.

Approved tests currently include IELTS for UKVI, LanguageCert, and Skills for English: SELT, depending on your route. Always confirm the current list on gov.uk before you book.
