What is actually confirmed

The Home Office English Language Testing programme aims at a single standardised test for visa and citizenship applications, replacing the SELT patchwork. It went through a public tender. IELTS withdrew in 2026, citing remote-testing security concerns. Launch is expected in December 2026.

The useful move while you wait

The required CEFR level is fixed by your route: B2 for Skilled Worker since January 2026, and typically B1 for settlement and citizenship. The CEFR does not care who prints the paper. Check gov.uk, take the free readiness quiz, and join the waitlist.
