Trinity ISE II and the HOELT: what you need to know

Trinity ISE II (Integrated Skills in English, Level II) has been one of the most popular Secure English Language Tests for UK visa applicants for many years. It is approved by the Home Office at CEFR B2 level and covers all four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

But from December 2026, Trinity ISE II will no longer be accepted for new UK visa applications.

What is replacing Trinity ISE II?

The Home Office English Language Test (HOELT) is the official replacement for Trinity ISE II and all other current SELTs. It has been designed by the Home Office to become the single standardised English language test for all UK visa routes.

If I already have Trinity ISE II, do I need HOELT?

If you already have a valid Trinity ISE II certificate that was accepted as part of a previous visa application, you do not need to re-take the test for that application. However:

• If your visa is coming up for renewal after December 2026, you will need HOELT.
• If you are applying for ILR from March 2027 onwards, you will need HOELT.
